Gollnest & Kiesel is the number one toy-maker!

Gollnest & Kiesel is the number one toy-maker!

The independent industry information service for SMEs "markt-intern" surveys more than 4,000 specialist toy dealers every two years regarding the performance of toy-makers. This year Gollnest & Kiesel was the convincing winner, and has thus been selected as the number one toy-maker. The prize was awarded to Gerhard Gollnest and Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel in person by the Editor in Chief Oliver Knoll.

Gold medals in central commercial disciplines

In his honours speech, Knoll noted that "Gollnest & Kiesel ranks among the gold medal-winners in central commercial disciplines. I would just like to name a few key words: Realisable trade margin, speed of turnover and terms/order conditions! These core disciplines show who is on the specialist dealers' side, and who guarantees them the amounts in euros that they need to operate successfully over the long term!"

Gerhard Gollnest and Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel: Partners for specialist retail

Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel and Gerhard Gollnest have seen themselves as partners for specialist retailers since forming the company in 1971. "Specialist retail has qualified employees and ensures life in city centres where discount stores have destroyed jobs and do not participate in social life. Specialist retailers are part of our cultural heritage – as are great toys. We attach great value to having our toys offered in a worthy environment, and not on the lifeless shelves of discount stores."

"We know that it will also take great efforts in future to satisfy these requirements. Efforts by both specialist retailers and also by manufacturers. We could take the easy way out and serve all of the channels that unconditionally accept the supply conditions of supposedly bigger players. But that is not our way! This is why we are delighted to win gold medals in the individual disciplines of realisable trade margins, speed of turnover, Internet policy and conditions, because these areas relate to the very core of our sales policy."

"We are also delighted with the major steps forward we have taken in many other disciplines such as product quality and also sales support. We would appear to be right on track."

"We won't be resting on our laurels. Together with us you can look forward to a lot more surprises this year."

Imagination and creativity

Gerhard Gollnest and Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel began manufacturing toys 34 years ago. Even now, the two founders and managing directors devote their attention to every single one of the company's products. Gerhard Gollnest comes up with ideas for new toys and discusses these with the product developers and designers. Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel turns the designs into products and supervises the company's production facilities all over the world.

Gerhard Gollnest and Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel have been business partners for more than 30 years. Before they formed their own company, they both trained as wholesale and export merchants with the same company. "Back then we thought that we could put our ideas into practice," commented Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel. That is how the young company was formed under an archway in the Wilhelmsburg district of Hamburg. The company has grown constantly since then, and for the last twenty years it has enjoyed strong growth in Güster, a small town not far from Hamburg.

Today the entrepreneurs, who have their roots in families of specialist retailers, have more than 600 employees worldwide in the company's various production facilities and at its headquarters, where the toy-maker's ideas are born.

"We produce toys for children's hands, heads, and souls," says Gerhard Gollnest. Gollnest & Kiesel has more than 600 employees worldwide, who are busy transforming a thousand new ideas into a thousand living colours.

The Gollnest & Kiesel brands

Gollnest & Kiesel has four brands. The longest-standing brand is already 100 years older, and has belonged to the group's parent company for the past five years.

Anker Stones were created by the Lilienthal Brothers in 1876. They made building bricks out of chalk, quartz sand, linseed oil and pigments which children can use to turn their own architectural fantasies into reality. The houses, churches and castles they build are stable thanks to the bricks' own weight and gravity. These sets of building blocks are regarded as being the first system toy in the world, with billions of bricks in circulation. They are produced in Rudolstadt in Thuringia (Germany).

Heimess is a 60-year old brand for baby toys made of fine wood. Dummy chains and touch rings are produced in Vaihingen an der Enz in Baden-Württemberg (Germany).

Holztiger is now over 15 years old. There are more than 400 figures, such as cows, pigs, dogs, dragons, monkeys and people for eight different worlds that are made of stable maple wood.

goki is the in-house brand of the company, which records the bulk of its sales with this brand.

Gollnest & Kiesel

Gollnest & Kiesel KG is Europe's innovative manufacturer of wooden toys and the largest toy company in northern Germany. Its brands HEIMESS (baby toys made of wood and high-quality plastic, made in Germany), goki, HOLZTIGER  and ANKER Stone Building Sets are well known in the toy and gift trade. The company was founded 34 years ago by its two owners. The HEIMESS brand has existed for over nearly 60 years, and ANKER Steinbaukasten GmbH in Rudolstadt can trace its history back over 130 years. More than 2,000 different products form one of the most widely varied ranges anywhere in the toy industry.

"We produce toys for children's hands, heads and souls," says Gerhard Gollnest. Over 600 Gollnest & Kiesel employees worldwide are busy transforming a thousand new ideas into a thousand living colours.

Gollnest & Kiesel places a very special emphasis on forestation. "Whoever takes something from nature must give something back to it," says Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel. Every year, Gollnest & Kiesel donates a new forest to Germany's least wooded state, Schleswig-Holstein. A tree is planted for every newborn child in the northernmost federal state. In this way, 300,000 new beech, maple and oak trees have been planted over the past ten years.
