For the tenth time: Gollnest & Kiesel donates 58,000 trees for a new forest in Schleswig-Holstein

The wooden toy manufacturer Gollnest & Kiesel from Güster is this year once again donating a tree for each newborn child in Schleswig-Holstein. This means that an impressive 58,000 trees are being planted, true to tradition, in the state forests of Schleswig-Holstein.

"For every child that was born this year in Schleswig-Holstein, we are planting a tree, this time in the woods near Ascheffel in the Hütten forestry district," says Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel, explaining the motives of the toy company. "We need a lot more civic commitment for the forest in our state, because we have a responsibility not only for us but also for the living conditions of future generations," added his business partner Gerhard Gollnest. It is important for both owners to support the concept of sustainability as well as to demonstrate, as they have now done for some ten years, the social and environmental responsibility of companies with the largest private forest donations in this federal state.

Some of these trees were planted on Monday, December 1, 2014 in the presence of representatives of the company Gollnest & Kiesel, the Schleswig-Holstein State Forestry Authority, the Ministry of the Environment and politicians in the Hütten forestry district, Fresenboye, Damendorf/Ascheffel by children from class 4a of the primary school Hüttener Berge and Waldjugend Hütten.

The Assistant Director of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forestry Authority (a public-law institution) thanked Gollnest & Kiesel for its exemplary commitment: "This is commendable community spirit in practice as well as being an ecological gain for this region and for Schleswig-Holstein as a whole," said Lutz Boucsein. "In order to achieve our goal of creating new woodland for Schleswig-Holstein more quickly, the state forestry authorities would be delighted to find more partners who contribute to environmental protection by binding carbon dioxide in wood," Boucsein went on to emphasise.

The Schleswig-Holstein state forestry authorities are providing an area of 11.45 hectares in the municipalities Damendorf, Gross Wittensee and Ascheffel for the creation of new woodland in the Hüttener Berge nature park.

Oak, beech, hornbeam, red alder and wild cherry trees as well as some native shrubs and a few old varieties of fruit trees are to be planted on this area.

With a forest share of only 10 percent, Schleswig-Holstein is the least wooded non-city state in Germany. Increasing the forest share to at least 12 percent is a task for generations.

The forest is an important natural habitat, a valuable natural legacy and an indispensable resource for humanity. The forest shapes entire landscapes; it is home to countless animals and plants; it protects the climate, the water and the soil. Not only the forest in Germany is important for us, but also the forests in other regions around the world.

The forest warms and clothes us, protecting us from cold and heat. As paper it carries and preserves information. We live in wooden buildings or under wooden roof timbers; we enjoy a home and garden culture which is "wooden" in many ways (tables, beds, chairs, windows, doors, cupboards, open fireplaces, etc.). Wood is a part of human history, and toys made of wood enable children to become part of this culture.

Besides increasing forestry, important ecological goals are realised. CO2 is bound by forest growth as well as the use of wood as material, e.g. for construction. This is a precautionary aspect for the future of our children.

"People also need intact recreation areas for their own regeneration. Wood is a wonderfully warm material, easy to work with and serves humanity in countless everyday tasks. Wood is a piece of human history," explain the two owners of the renowned toy company. Next year they once again want to commit themselves to a piece of new forest.
